How to choose a duvet?

Read our guidelines to enjoy an excellent duvet choice for you and your family.

Although bed linen and duvets are an integral and mandatory part of every home, it turns out that many people do not know the difference between different fabrics and their methods of production.

As a manufacturer with many years of experience, we will be more than happy to share with you some basic concepts related to fabrics, stuffing and production of lightweight duvets, so you can best navigate in the large supply in physical and online stores and be able to make the right choice for you and your family.

As we have already mentioned, although often neglected, our duvet is a very important part of our home and interior, because it is one of the things that makes our night sleep comfortable. Choosing the right duvet is crucial if we want to start our morning well-rested and ready for the day.

Here are some of the most important factors to consider when choosing a duvet:

 ▪ The size of the duvet - match the size of the duvet cover with that of the duvet.  If the duvet is smaller than its cover, the edges of the cover will be empty and you will not have a feeling of volume and softness and most importantly, comfort.  If the duvet is bigger, placing it in the cover will become a difficult, inconvenient and time-consuming process.  There will be some overlapping of the fabric, unevenness and inconvenience in its use. In Bulgaria there are accepted standards in the size of the bed linen and usually the production of blankets is in accordance with those standards.  For example, the single quilt is 150x210 cm and the double - 200x210 cm. We always pay attention to this, as there is a supply of home textiles from other countries, close and far from ours, where the standards for the size of mattresses, duvets and bed linen are different. Quite often the purchase is not successful due to this discrepancy and we definitely want to avoid that.

 ▪ Duvet density is another important factor to consider if you want sleep as comfortably as possible – firstly, estimate the temperature in your bedroom.  If you sleep in a warmer room, a duvet which is too thick can warm you more than wanted thus resulting in the unpleasant effect of overheating.  If this is the case, then a summer or all-season duvet would be the most suitable for you as they are finer and lighter, still provide comfort and warmth, but to an extent that does not lead to overheating and sweating during sleep.  Duvets with silicone down stuffing would be a great choice for those of you who like the feeling of lightness.  This type of stuffing does not cause allergies, does not deform and contributes to good thermoregulation of the body.  An additional advantage is its easy maintenance - you can wash in the washing machine and dry in the dryer as long as the programs you use are with low degrees. This easy maintenance ensures that the duvet will be soft and fragrant again.  However, if you prefer sleeping in colder temperatures or with an open window, even in winter, a blanket filled with wool or goose down will provide you with excellent and even warmth and a feeling of softness and pure comfort. A thing to note here - natural fillings such as goose down and feathers are high-class, but should be used with caution by people suffering from allergies.

 ▪ The front fabric - the most practical and commonly used options for the front fabric are two - microfiber and cotton.  Each of them has its advantages and brings different benefits to consumers.  We will list some of their main characteristics to best guide you on deciding what kind of front fabric suits you best before your next purchase. Cotton fabric is known for its natural origin – it is gentle, delicate to the skin, and most importantly – it does not cause allergies. Moreover, cotton provides proper heat exchange of the body throughout the night, allows for the removal of excess moisture and heat, which is not only a comfortable sleeping environment, but also a good hygienic one.  Microfiber on the other hand is a synthetic material - polyester.  Water is not used for its coloring as in cotton products.  The microfiber used in the textile industry for clothes and duvets is durable, light and very gentle to the touch.  It has the property of not retaining moisture as it allows it to evaporate.  That is the reason why most of sportswear is made from microfiber.  Lightweight microfiber duvets are durable, do not deform, do not crease so easily and allow excess moisture to be removed and not retained in the fabric.  Price comparison is in favor of microfiber -It is the more budget-friendly option.  Whether you choose cotton or microfiber depends on your personal preferences, the purpose of using the blankets - whether they will be for personal or public use,  tailored to your budget and attitudes.

 ▪ The color is important - whether you like fresh and colorful patterns or you want to go with the classic white - we offer you a choice according to your personal preferences.  Match the colors of the duvet with the interior of the room and the color of the bed linen.  If your bed linen has a light color and you choose a dark or very colorful duvet, there is a risk that the dark color of the duvet will start out thus not bring the desired feeling of aesthetics and beauty.

 ▪ Washing and maintenance: For each product in our online store we have thoroughly described the exact ways of washing and maintenance, but here we will tell you in detail how you can further extend the life of your duvets.  Information about what care and maintenance are required for your specific type of duvet can also facilitate your decision according to the time you have and the effort you are willing to put in.  Lightweight duvets with silicone down stuffing are very easy and convenient to maintain.  They are quick and easy to wash at home in your washing machine.  To do this, simply choose a program with a washing temperature of 30 degrees and put the usual amount of washing powder or liquid, suitable for colored or white laundry.  Duvets can be dried in sunlight, at room temperature or in the dryer if you have one.  It is important that the temperature is not too high as too high temperatures can result in deformation of the duvet.  This also applies to all other types of fabrics.  High temperatures often lead to shrinkage, bleaching and deformation of clothes, duvets, blankets and towels.

Duvets stuffed with wool or goose down have a slightly different way of washing and maintenance.  To keep them soft and fluffy for a long time, you need to take special care of them - specifically, they should be washed with less washing powder as too much washing powder/liquid can damage the delicate filling.  Drying in a dryer should be done as follows: run your duvet on a program with not very high temperature and after about 15 minutes stop it to check the temperature inside.  If it is not warm and the drying process has not started, you can slightly increase the temperature.  If it is too hot, it is best to lower the temperature to prevent any damage.  It is also a good idea to stop the drying cycle a few more times throughout the drying process to adjust the stuffing. This will allow for equal distribution of the filling and even drying.  If you do not use a dryer, you should put the duvet evenly spread out in sunlight. Do not hang it in space or on a drying rack as this can cause deformation.  Although proper maintenance sounds like a time-consuming process, it will ensure a long life of you duvets and it will definitely bring you satisfaction from your investment in better sleep.
