Different materials and what do we know about them?

In the textile industry, the variety of fabrics available is really large and can often be confusing for consumers who are not sufficiently informed on the topic.  That is why we have prepared this useful article in where we have synthesized basic terms and short descriptions  in order to acquaint our customers, partners and friends with some basic concepts in our field.

Cotton: Cotton does not usually bleach and does not form lints on its surface over time.  Its main disadvantage is that it is easily crushed.  The table below shows the different types of cotton and their benefits.

Kind of cotton

Advantages

Egyptian cotton

Egyptian cotton uses threads with a length of 3.5 cm, which makes the fabric unprecedentedly soft, yet extremely durable.  Rarity on the Bulgarian market due to its high price.  In the section "Luxury bedroom sets" you will find bed linen from Egyptian cotton, originating from Israel.

Cotton satin

Made of 100% pure cotton, there are more threads on the surface than on the bottom, which gives cotton satin smoothness and fine shine.  It has nothing to do with the satin sheets offered on the Bulgarian market at low prices, which are actually made of polyester.  Less durable than other materials, as it has very soft and fine texture (like satin).

Ranfors

Ranfors is a fabric with a matte finish and flexible curves and is characterized by greater strength, softness and less shrinkage compared to other more commonly used types of materials.  The structure of the thread is twisted, ring yarn.  Ranfors has a higher thread density, finer fabric and is durable to  washing.  It is made of 100% cotton, unlike calico, which may be mixed with polyester.

Cotton and polyester

It does not drain and absorb sweat from the body as effectively (which can lead to steaming effect).  Suitable combination for blankets and bedspreads, as it gives them strength and durability.

Pima cotton

Cotton grown in the USA, Australia or India.  Shorter fibers make the fabric less soft.  Less durable, compared to cotton with longer threads.  Not available on the Bulgarian market.

Supima cotton

This type of cotton is grown in South America.  It has longer fiber than pima, it more durable and softer.  Not available on the Bulgarian market.

Silk:

Silk bed linen naturally maintains coolness, ensuring  person's comfort all night long.  Moreover, Silk bed linen is hypoallergenic, which makes it an ideal choice for people suffering from allergies.  The best silk bedroom sets are made of so-called "Mulberry" silk, which is very durable.  Pure silk bedroom sets are a rarity on the Bulgarian market, as their price starts from BGN 1,000 and potentially goes up.  Bedding sets with woven silk can be found at more affordable prices.

Bamboo:

As long as it is not grown with pesticides, bamboo in bed linen is naturally hypoallergenic.  It is very important to wash the bamboo bed linen in a light cycle in the washing machine and, if possible, to dry it in the air, as the fabric is not very durable and can be easily damaged.  Bamboo is the perfect choice for lovers of eco-living.  In the recent years it has become increasingly common on the market in Bulgaria at affordable prices.

Polyester:

Polyester bed linen is generally the cheapest and most common type of bed linen on the market in Bulgaria. Polyester sheets are rough, hard and do not breathe like natural fabrics, which can lead to more sweating and heat accumulation potentially resulting in uncomfortable sleep at night.  The online store www.homeslinen.com does not offer bed linen made partly or entirely of polyester.  You will find polyester used only in some of our other products - blankets, duvets, etc., where it is an integral ingredient for maintaining the strength and integrity of the product.

When choosing a fabric for bed linen, the most important to take into account are the  individual needs of people, as each type of fabric has its advantages and disadvantages.

Tip 2. Pay attention to the number of threads

Except for silk bed linen, in everything else, the higher the number of threads, the better the quality of the fabric is.  The number of threads can vary greatly – ranging from 50 to 350 cm2.  Manufacturers calculate these figures by summing the number of threads that make up the fabric (vertical and horizontal) per square centimeter.  The higher the number, the softer and more durable the fabric will be.

Tip 3. Do not forget the way of weaving

The way the bed linen is woven determines how the threads come together.  It is important to clarify for yourself the desired characteristics of the bed linen and then to choose the exact way of weaving that meets these criteria.  Below are the main ways of weaving bed linen on the Bulgarian market.

Percale

Bed linen that has the same number of threads at the bottom and at the top.  Extremely strong and pleasant to the touch.  High class bed linen.

Ranfors

Similarly to percale, Ranfors has the same number of threads above and below.  The difference between the two fabrics is that Ranfors uses a smaller number of threads per square centimeter.

Satin

The satin braid has more threads at the top than at the bottom, which makes it softer and delicate to the touch, but also not that strong and durable..

Tip 4. Choose the right color

People react differently to different colors.  When choosing the color of your home textiles, it is of major importance to look at approximately the same amount of light that is in the bedroom, as different fabrics look different in different amounts of light.  Different colors have different effects on the occupants of the home.  For example, the colors of the pink-purple range are associated with creativity and fertility, whereas blue is thought to boost creativity and innovation.  Green is known to convey feeling of  harmony and freedom to the beholder.
